Garlic put Gilroy on the Map
For many, the pungent herb holds a mystery and attraction they simply cannot ignore. Known as the “Garlic Capital of the World,” the city (and 4,000 devoted local volunteers) put on a rousing and world-famous garlic festival the last full weekend of July. Now in its 32nd year, the Gilroy Garlic Festival draws more than 100,000 visitors who experience fabulous food, entertainment, unique crafts, and a children’s area.
One highlight of any visit to Gilroy is a drive out Hecker Pass Highway to enjoy the splendor of the “Field of Dreams” at Goldsmith Seeds. This world-renowned horticultural attraction invites visitors to walk among six acres of thousands of experimental flowers (many of them one-of-a-kind). Another horticultural adventure is Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park, which features more than 40 family attractions including six majestic gardens, unique educational exhibits, rides designed to both educate and entertain, and the world-famous Circus Trees—one-of-a-kind natural wonders that have to be seen to be believed. Also on (and just off) Hecker Pass are wineries offering tours, tastings, and more. Winemaking is a time-honored tradition dating back to the Gold Rush era in the southern Santa Clara Valley. But it’s alive and well in Gilroy.
For something a little less agricultural, visitors head to the Gilroy Premium Outlets, the ultimate discount-shopping opportunity on the Central Coast. Shoppers from around the world take advantage of the extraordinary values at 145 brand-name stores.
The revitalized downtown area of Gilroy combines historic buildings, quaint antique shops, and small family-run restaurants. Garlic-laced dishes can be enjoyed at numerous restaurants and garlic shops featuring garlic memorabilia/collectibles are sprinkled throughout the community.
